For years, Pepe has been the ultimate self-proliferating memetic expression on the internet. Arguably, he was cc0 before cc0 was cool.
Steve Job once famously quoted Picasso, "Great artists steal." While Matt Furie may have created the original "feelgoodman.jpg" Pepe, the internet at large was inspired to abandon traditional notions of originality and provenance, and instead steal and remix with reckless abandon, memeing the frog into a permanent cultural fixation
Over the Christmas holiday 2022, I dove deep into the archives to source the rarest Pepes I could find to curate and digitally remaster into a cc0 generative collection. In the midst of this project, I was introduced to Gnars and Nouns.
